Frequently Asked Questions

Harris Tweed is a distinguished fabric crafted from 100% pure new wool. The wool is dyed, spun, and finished exclusively in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. What sets Harris Tweed apart is that it is handwoven by skilled local islanders at their own homes. Notably, Harris Tweed is the only fabric worldwide to be protected by its own Act of Parliament, established in 1993.

Ownership of Harris Tweed does not belong to a single party. Rather, it is a protected brand produced by three independent mills and numerous individual weavers situated in the Outer Hebrides. The entire industry is overseen and regulated by the Harris Tweed Authority.

The legal guardian of the Harris Tweed brand is the Harris Tweed Authority (HTA). Founded under the Harris Tweed Act of 1993, the HTA owns the renowned Orb trademark. The Authority’s primary role is to ensure that all fabric carrying the “Harris Tweed” name is genuinely handwoven by islanders residing in the Outer Hebrides.

The production process for Harris Tweed begins by dyeing 100% pure virgin wool before it is spun. This allows for a sophisticated blending of colours, which often reflect the natural beauty of the Hebridean landscape. The wool is dyed in vats, dried, and then blended to achieve specific shades. It is subsequently carded into "slivers" - soft fibres - before being spun into robust yarn. Finally, this yarn is handwoven into cloth by local islanders in the Outer Hebrides.

Authentic Harris Tweed is never woven in factories. By legal mandate, all Harris Tweed must be handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The wool is dyed and spun in local mills, while the weaving process takes place on treadle looms within weavers’ crofts, preserving its status as a traditional home industry.

According to the regulations outlined in the Harris Tweed Act of 1993, Harris Tweed must be handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides. The industry operates as a cottage industry, and the law generally restricts the number of looms under one roof to no more than two.

Indeed, Harris Tweed holds the distinction of being the only fabric in the world protected by its own Act of Parliament. The Harris Tweed Act of 1993 stipulates that genuine Harris Tweed must be made from 100% pure virgin wool, dyed, spun, and finished in the Outer Hebrides, and handwoven by islanders at their homes. This legal safeguard, enforced by the Harris Tweed Authority, guarantees both the authenticity and traditional production methods of the fabric.

  • Cleaning: Professional dry cleaning is recommended for Harris Tweed garments. Small stains can be treated with a gentle, suitable remover by spot cleaning.
  • Moths: To protect Harris Tweed from moths, use moth repellents and store the fabric in sealed bags or boxes if keeping it for long-term storage.
